Coaching Team

Bao Liu

Director/Coach

Bao is a Bay Area native who is immensely passionate with fencing and has been fencing for nearly 25 years. He attended Galileo Academy of Science and Technology in San Francisco where he was a continuous medalist for three consecutive years – placing top two in the city, top five at the All-State Championships, and helped lead the team to consecutive gold medals. He attended and fenced at UC Davis where he completed his undergraduate studies.

A descendant of San Francisco’s Pannonia Athletic Club and Letterman Club (prominent fencing clubs from the 1950s through the 1970s), he founded Journeys Fencing Club in hopes of not only to spread the sport to the surrounding communities, but to also share the wonderful coaching he received in his early days. What he found most awing from his coaches was not the technical skills they taught, but rather, their display of patience, tolerance, generosity, and kindness.

After two years of directing and coaching at Journeys, his students have won numerous medals at the regional level competitions and are looking to attend their first US National Championships in the summer of 2025. He intends to push his students into the international competition scene.

Bao is a registered coach with the United States Fencing Association.
